About
This site is a working effort to build Canadian personal-finance calculators that you can actually trust: every formula sourced from a primary government document, every value dated and re-verified on a published schedule, every page that displays a number telling you when that number was last checked and against what.
Who maintains it
The site is operated by a solo maintainer (Canadian + Nigerian dual-resident, software background) building in public. The maintainer is not a CPA or a financial advisor. Every calculator is explicitly an estimate, and we say so prominently. As traffic and stakes grow we will bring in a Chartered Professional Accountant to review the high-risk tax tools; see our methodology page for the exact thresholds that will trigger that review.
Why we exist
Three things are broken about the Canadian calculator landscape:
- Most calculators are built by banks or lenders whose primary goal is to route you into a product, not to give you an accurate number.
- Many tools are stale. Tax brackets, contribution limits, and payroll formulas change at predictable intervals (CRA T4127 twice a year, provincial budgets every spring, Bank of Canada rate decisions eight times a year), but most calculators don't say when they were last updated or against what source.
- Quebec is routinely treated as an afterthought, CPP2 is rarely modelled correctly, and the federal Basic Personal Amount phase-out for higher earners is almost never handled.
We're not trying to be cleverer than the CRA. We're trying to surface the CRA's own logic in a form a person can use, with clear citations and an audit trail.
How we work
- Every formula and limit lives in a versioned data file that cites the source URL, effective date, and the date the operator last verified it.
- Every calculator ships with at least 10 reference test cases (20+ for high-risk tax tools). The build fails if any case diverges from the official source by more than 1%.
- Every page that displays computed output shows you the date it was last verified, the source it relies on, and its known limitations.
- Errors are corrected quickly and visibly. See how to report one and our correction service-level commitment on the methodology page.
