What our calculators do
Each calculator on this site implements a specific Canadian tax, contribution-room, or mortgage formula using values published by the Canada Revenue Agency, provincial finance ministries, the Bank of Canada, or another government source listed on the methodology page. They apply the same arithmetic those agencies do, and they show their work: you can see the source URL and the date we last verified the value on every tool page.
What our calculators do not do
- Replace a CPA. A Chartered Professional Accountant knows your full financial picture, including the things you didn't tell us because you didn't think they mattered. A calculator does not.
- Account for every edge case. Each tool's "Known limitations" section lists what it does and does not cover. Common omissions in early versions: Quebec-specific tax mechanics (handled separately), self-employment, foreign-source income, special CRA rulings, and recently changed rules within the verification window.
- Tell you what to do. "Your FHSA room is $X" is a calculation. "You should contribute $X to your FHSA" is advice. We do the first; we don't do the second.
- Catch CRA rule changes that haven't propagated yet. We update on a published schedule. Between scheduled updates, a tool may not yet reflect a brand-new ruling. The "last verified" date on every tool tells you exactly how current the data is.
When to consult a professional
Consult a CPA or licensed financial advisor before acting on any calculator output if any of the following apply:
- You're considering a transaction worth more than a few thousand dollars.
- You have foreign income, self-employment income, or rental income.
- You're navigating a life change: marriage, divorce, inheritance, sale of a home, leaving Canada.
- You've received a CRA notice, audit letter, or reassessment.
- You're not sure whether a particular rule applies to you.
Most CPAs offer a short paid consultation for exactly these situations. It's almost always money well spent.
If we make a mistake
We will fix it. Our correction service-level commitment is on the methodology page: 24-hour acknowledgement, 7-day fix, public changelog entry. Report errors through the contact page.
